Designing Joy, at a Great Profit

A fellow named Brett Williams has been killin’ it with an all-you-can eat design firm concept: designjoy.co. You pay him between $2500 and $3k a month and you get unlimited design and/or webdesign for that month. A membership model, design as a subscription service. He’s clearing $100k/month average, he says.

And I think that it’s brilliant. He’s getting tons of flak from the community, of course, because, you know, haters gotta hate, but…why? Maybe because he’s also being super transparent about how it works. To, me, also super-cool. The only thing that I don’t quite understand is when he sleeps. That’s a little upsetting.

But it’s something for all of us to think about. There are people that want this, that know that it’s something that makes sense to them. Subscriptions are not bad, memberships are not bad. Annoying? Maybe, especially if you have ADHD and you don’t remind yourself to go and check all the things that you’ve subscribed to. But I think that these models promote choice, more than anything. And I do like having choices.
